Gulf of Mexico plane crash kills 2 near Venice Airport

Two men died in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico near Venice Airport.

The plane crashed about half a mile off the Venice Fishing Pier around 10:00 p.m.

The crash occurred after the plane took off from Venice Municipal Airport.

The bodies of the two men, aged 50s or 60s, were recovered at the crash site.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed there were no other passengers on the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with local authorities, is investigating the crash.

Venice Municipal Airport's runway can be disorienting at night, according to a pilot.

In December 2022, a similar fatal crash occurred at the same airport, killing a family of three.

Preliminary findings from NTSB show the plane only reached about 75 feet in altitude before crashing.

The pilot in the December 2022 crash was identified as Christian Kath, 42, of St. Petersburg.
