Ex-Caps goalies Vanecek and Samsonov have bad night

Two former Washington Capitals goalies, Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov, were playing in the playoffs.

Vanecek gave up four goals in his game for the New Jersey Devils against the Rangers.

Samsonov allowed six goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Lightning before being pulled.

The two goalies combined to allow 10 goals on 51 shots.

Vanecek had little goal support and saved 18 of 22 shots for an .818 save percentage.

Natural Stat Trick estimated that Vanecek allowed 1.6 goals below expected.

Samsonov's save percentage in game one was .793, and he allowed 2.4 goals more than expected.

Samsonov got pulled after the second period, and his playoff record is now 1-7.

The Capitals did not keep either goalie after the 2021-22 season, and they received draft picks for Vanecek.

The Capitals signed Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren in free agency as their new goalies.
